Due to the construction of the railway fly-over on Gogoļa iela within the framework of the Rail Baltica project, there will be significant changes in the organisation of traffic and pedestrian flow in Gogoļa iela, the representatives of the construction company BeReRix said.
By the beginning of 2023, pedestrian and vehicle traffic will only be organised on the west side of Gogoļa iela, which is the side of Riga Central Market. Any pedestrian movement on the east side of the railway fly-over in Gogoļa iela, or on the railway station side, will be impossible due to the construction works.
The underground tunnel that connects the station and the market will also be closed during this period. The crossing of Gogoļa iela in this area will be possible via a street level pedestrian crossing with Gaiziņa iela.
Vehicle traffic will be organised on the west side of Gogoļa iela only, which is the side of Riga Central Market.
The location of the public transport stop “Centrāltirgus” (towards the centre) will also be moved. Until early 2023, the stop will be located closer to the Ministry of Transport building in the middle of Gogol Street on a specially designed “island”.
Pedestrians, motorists and public transport drivers are encouraged to follow the signs and road markings placed in the city environment. You may also need to spend more time on your commute.
The construction of the railway fly-over on Gogoļa iela is expected to be completed in December 2023. To ensure safe proceeding of the construction process, traffic on Gogoļa iela will be switched from one side of the fly-over tunnel to the other several times. General partnership BeReRix will ensure the placement of information signs during the construction works.
As already reported, the Rail Baltica project provides for the construction of a European standard gauge railway line from Tallinn to the Lithuanian-Polish border with the objective of connecting the Baltic states with other European countries by rail. The construction of a new 870-kilometre European standard gauge (1435 millimetres) rail line with the maximum train speed of 240 kilometres per hour is planned in the Baltic states.
The cost of Rail Baltica is expected to reach EUR 5.8 billion, including the railway branch between Kaunas and Vilnius. A certain share of the costs will be covered by European Union funds. Rail Baltica will be opened gradually in several phases between 2026 and 2030.
