There is a growing interest in reused resources for road construction, according to reports by Dienas Bizness newspaper.
As municipalities take a stand against dilapidated buildings, there is no shortage of work for companies dealing in demolition. Another question is what to do with the rubble and whether it can be reused. Chairman of Demontāža Ltd Mārtiņš Mālnieks says that, after separating concrete from construction debris, it can be recycled into concrete chips and used in road construction as an alternative to dolomite chips. Crushed concrete is sufficiently hard and also cheaper than granite and dolomite. According to him, it is already being used in Latvia for the construction of car parks and temporary roads, such as construction site access roads, yet the use could be much more widespread. In Germany, recycled concrete is even used in the construction of autobahns, its use is not frowned upon in Lithuania and it is suitable for forest roads, he adds.
When asked by DB, several manufacturers of road construction materials said that in theory it could be used, especially on local roads, but there were some practical obstacles.
