At the very end of last year, demolition of the abandoned military structures in Skrunda, near the former Skrunda radar, was commenced. Currently, two buildings with an area of 1,200 square metres are being demolished. The work was commissioned by JSC Latvia’s State Forests and the contractor is Demontāža.lv.
The demolition work is scheduled to be carried out within three months and the amount of the contract is EUR 23,000.
"We use special technical equipment for work - excavators with hydraulic demolition shears and hydraulic hammers, front loaders and a mobile crusher. The rubble will be recycled into crushed concrete to be used for road and car park surfacing, while the area where the buildings once stood will be improved and planted with trees," said Mārtiņš Mālnieks, the director of Demontāža.lv.
The Skrunda radar station was a Soviet military site near the town of Skrunda. The new radar building was demolished by controlled explosion on 4 May 1995. This event had symbolic importance in abandoning Soviet military heritage. The radar town once consisted of a number of residential buildings, barracks, administrative buildings, boiler house, kindergarten, secondary school and many other facilities.
